Steelcon approached T&M Cranes for help modernizing a critical step in their steel fabrication process that would reduce handling time, improve safety, and remove production bottlenecks. Doing so required a custom-engineered solution for positioning large steel components with unique handling requirements.

Our custom steel product rotators proved essential to improving line speeds while reducing risks associated with large, shifting loads. Improved parts handling also improved accuracy for a variety of fabrication and assembly challenges. Instead of adapting off-the-shelf equipment, our focus was on engineering lifting devices around real production constraints.

Together, Steelcon and T&M’s design team developed a novel solution to resolve immediate production challenges, scale with demand, and accelerate repeat builds.

The Challenge: Eliminating Production Bottlenecks

Steelcon specializes in fabricating large steel components for industrial buildings, many of which require welding multiple sides during production. Prior to this project, rotating large structural components relied on overhead cranes and coordinated manual handling. Each flip required multiple employees, careful timing, and significant floor space, which slowed throughput and necessitated close worker proximity.

What Steelcon required was a dedicated system to reduce cycle time, improve operator safety, and raise quality for numerous fabrication processes. Steelcon also needed support for unique component sizes.

These design challenges precluded the possibility of adapting generic equipment, necessitating a custom solution that fulfilled several key requirements:

  • A rotator capable of handling unconventional sizes and heavy steel loads
  • Compliance with applicable safety and regulatory standards
  • Seamless integration into an existing fabrication workflow
  • Flexibility to support future increases in size and capacity

Based on prior positive experience and confidence in T&M’s engineering and build quality, Steelcon selected T&M Cranes to deliver the solution.

The Solution: Purpose-Built Rotator Systems

The Solution: Purpose-Built Rotator Systems

T&M Cranes provided a full-service solution, managing design, engineering, fabrication, and delivery of two custom steel product rotator systems. Our crane and design engineers worked closely with Steelcon to define load characteristics, rotation frequency, operator interaction, and long-term production goals.

In addition to engineering complexity, logistics presented another practical challenge. Having prefabricated our rotator system in the U.S., shipping to Canada required careful coordination around materials, scheduling, and customs clearance. T&M planned the build and delivery to keep the project on schedule while meeting all compliance requirements.

The result was a ready-built system engineered for simplicity, safety, and repeatability, providing:

  • Custom-designed rotators supporting Steelcon’s need for adaptation and flexibility
  • Expanded lifting capacity with multiple size configurations
  • Controlled rotation allowing single-operator use instead of multi-person crane lifts
  • Fabrication support for specialty lines with certified welders

Once installed, our custom rotators immediately reduced handling times while simplifying complex operations.

The Result: Faster Cycles, Safer Work, Ongoing Growth

The Result: Faster Cycles, Safer Work, Ongoing Growth

Steelcon experienced immediate improvements in production and safety. One process, which previously took up to ten minutes and required multiple employees, now takes less than one minute. This not only represents an ~80% reduction in production time, but also reduces the manpower required to sustain operations.

T&M’s custom rotators improved both throughput and consistency. Steelcon operators can now flip components with greater control and weld both sides without repositioning delays. Their new parts-positioning system also increases flexibility, accommodating a wide range of component sizes while supporting future production needs.

Key results from successful project completion include:

  • Faster, more predictable production cycles
  • Improved safety by eliminating complex overhead crane maneuvers
  • Reduced labor requirements at a critical fabrication stage
  • Greater capacity for additional custom rotator systems in the future

These project highlights reinforce T&M Cranes‘ role as an engineering partner rather than a one-time supplier. As Steelcon continues to modernize and expand, our custom rotator systems provide a foundation for safer, more efficient fabrication.
