Structure
Overhead
An overhead crane is built using two parallel runways that are on either side of a concourse or aisle. These runways are bridged with a perpendicular railway that moves along the runways the length of the concourse. This connecting railway is where the hoist is located. An overhead crane can be described as having a dynamic “H” shape as the central railway and hoist are designed to run along the runways.
Monorail
In contrast to an overhead crane, a monorail has two freestanding frames at opposite ends of a concourse, which are then connected with a single rail that functions as a runway. This rail is where the hoist will move from one end of the concourse to the other.

One of the benefits of an overhead crane is its versatility. Users have three-dimensional motion available as an overhead crane functions on an XYZ axis. This variety provides forward and backward movement as well as the necessary hoist and drop motion. The piece that sets overhead cranes apart from monorail is the side-to-side motion. A monorail crane functions solely on an XY plane. The hoist is able to move up and down the line while being limited to the range of the runway that connects the two frames.

The use of a monorail crane is quite obviously limited. With its nature essentially limited to back and forth, this type of crane doesn’t serve well as an all-around crane. However, a monorail crane can be useful in replacing a conveyer belt or relocating products within a restricted area. Building, implementing, and using a monorail crane takes much less space than an overhead crane traditionally will.
